Online GED is a family-run enterprise.
Shirley Erwee is a homeschooling mother, who has been home educating her own 6 children plus two others for 20 years, since 1997.
In 2016, after years of recommending the GED® as a solution for homeschoolers and others needing to get a grade 12 equivalent, she launched this Online GED® South Africa site to help candidates wishing to prepare for the GED® tests.
Shirley is also a home education activist and consultant, as well as a curriculum provider offering various other learning materials for South African homeschoolers, including the Footprints On Our Land programmes.
In 2014 and 2015 she authored two books on homeschooling in South Africa, namely Homeschooling the Primary Years and Homeschooling High School and she offers two series of webinars
for parents starting home education: Starting Homeschooling and Homeschooling High School.
Shirley is well-known in the local homeschooling community as an expert and speaker at home education events. She has also been interviewed by the media on numerous occasions on radio programmes, such as SAFm, Ofm, Whalecoast FM as well as 567 CapeTalk and consulted by journalists of various South African magazines for their articles about home education.

Shirley offers seminars, webinars, personal homeschool consultations and advice via email and on social media platforms to encourage homeschooling parents through the challenges they face.
In July 2015, she attended consultative meetings with the Department of Basic Education in Pretoria, regarding the formulation of a new policy for home education in South Africa.
In May 2018, accompanied by her husband Riaan, Shirley attended the 2018 Global Home Education Conference, held in Russia in St. Petersburg and Moscow.
Homeschool Community Network
Shirley Erwee is the founder and an active event organiser in her local homeschool support group, Overberg Homeschoolers and a member of Cape Home Educators in the Western Cape.
She has also joined the following national homeschool organisations:

- The Pestalozzi Trust. She represented the Pestalozzi Trust at meetings with the Department of Education in July 2015.

Jonathan Erwee is a homeschooled graduate who completed the GED® in 2017 with top marks in all subjects. He has an interest in robotics, electronics and programming.
He is a GED® consultant and also runs his own small homeschool product business, namely, SA Homeschool Suppliers, offering a range of workbooks for English and Afrikaans language studies in the junior grades.
